First 9 Steps to Becoming a Helicopter Pilot…
We understand that the process of applying for financial aid can be time consuming and sometimes frustrating. Below you will find a list of steps that must be completed in order to comply with Utah Valley State College’s admission requirements as well as the Salt Lake Community College and Mountain State and to ensure a timely enrollment.

1.) Take an Introductory Flight. This flight consists of meeting with a Certified Flight Instructor, discussing some information pertaining to the Robinson R22, receiving an endorsement, and going for a flight. The instructor will allow you to get a hands on feel for what flying a helicopter is really like.
2.) Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This form will check your eligibility for Pell Grants and Stafford Loans. When filling out the form, you will need access to the information on the previous year’s taxes. If you are under age 23 and not married, you will need your parent’s tax information as well. The form will ask for a school code, you will need to enter the school you are attending school code. Utah Valley State College’s school code is 004027. The school code for Salt Lake Community College is 005220. Mountain State University is 003807. It will take between 3-10 weeks to be processed. Please do not wait to hear back on this form to move on to the next step. The results will be sent to the college.
3.) Complete FAA Medical. You will need a 2nd Class Medical with a Student Certificate. To find an FAA approved medical examiner, you can visit http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/. To make the process go a little faster, you can fill out a form in advance at https://medxpress.faa.gov.
4.) Apply to UVSC at www.uvsc.edu Salt Lake Community College at www.slcc.edu, or Mountain State University at www.aviation.mountainstate.edu. If you have general education credits that you would like to transfer please contact the school registration office.
5.) Apply for an Alternative Student Loan. Please contact the college financial aid office to see which loan will work best for you.
6.) Follow the school’s Step by Step guide to financial aid.
7.) Check the status of your application and financial aid on the school website and REGISTER FOR CLASSES. You can either contact the college or Upper Limit Aviation for class suggestions.
8.) Wait to receive your Student Aid Report. Check to see if everything is correct. If there are mistakes, correct them online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ Look to see if you are selected for verification (this has nothing to do with the amount you will be awarded.)
9.) Meet with Upper Limit Aviation staff to begin filling out paper work.
