ULA Helicopter Training School
At Upper Limit Aviation, our owners are also pilots and instructors. This way, our helicopter training school understands our student’s needs.
At ULA we have learned to look at personality and attitude first, skill and experiences second. We realize that we cannot build a “great” company without “great” people. Team spirit, humor, energy, self-confidence, and genuineness are essential personality traits required to be an employee at Upper Limit Aviation, Inc. In addition, we operate in a fast-paced environment, where innovative problem solving skills, personal accountability, adaptability/flexibility, a tolerance for stress, and attention to detail are crucial. We look for a “whatever it takes” attitude - to think “outside the box”.
We are a small family owned business. A small business works very much like a family, in which we all succeed or fail together. A weak link cannot hide. A ULA employee has the ability to understand how to place their individual interests in harmony with a sense of mission, and to display loyalty and purpose for the common good. An understanding knowledge, a “sense” of the personal effort it takes, and individual commitment required to work towards common goals is essential in our employees.
Self-confidence is an essential part of communication skills. Whether in developing new ideas and concepts or to resolve conflicts, self-confidence determines the ability to communicate effectively. Self-confidence can be the determining difference between an effective communicator and a gossip or a backbiter. The ability and desire to honestly understand and conversely convey thoughts clearly and without prejudice, is the difference between someone who creates an atmosphere of fair play and cohesion or self-centered ego driven division.
Our industry is serious “fun”. Humor does not change the adversities of life but makes life’s challenges more bearable. A dour, taciturn, personality will not fit into our company. Humor is the pressure release valve or the stress-buster, which allows us to keep our sanity in stressful and overwhelming situations.
Passion, genuineness, and the ability to listen, mixed with the energy to express, communicate, and impress upon others the excitement and knowledge of this industry are some of the final distinguishing characteristics of a ULA employee.
At Upper Limit Aviation, we value our employees. They are the backbone of our business. Our futures are inextricably linked. We move forward with the company vision through our ability to function as a team through our ingenuity, respect, ability to count on each other in a defined direction. We love what we do and we express that to each other and to our students daily.
Owners, Faculty and Staff
CFI, Instrument
Sean began his passion for flying at a young age watching the space shuttle land at Edwards Air Force Base. Finding his way into the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he soon discovered that along with airplanes, he loved flying helicopters. Sean either held a job, was rebuilding offroad vehicles, or has been an entrepreneur since the age of 14. Therefore, it seemed natural for Sean to envision Upper Limit Aviation in the summer of 2003. He worked on a business plan with his family, scouted a location, and started Upper Limit Aviation in the spring of 2004. Things started small, he hired one CFI, bought a Robinson R22, found a handful of students and went to work. Within one year, the fleet had grown to three R22’s. In 2005, his family joined him full time in the business. Sean has flown a variety of utility work in both piston and turbine powered helicopters. Most recently, Sean piloted a Bell 206B performing magnetometer surveys for New Sense Geophysical. Sean will be flying a Bell 206L4 this summer on a US Forest Service firefighting contract in Utah.

Lois has a varied and multi-faceted background. She has been with Upper Limit Aviation from the beginning, helping to formulate the original school business plan and acquire equipment. Her love of aviation and strong business background has helped form a strong, financially sound corporation. Lois is sometimes the opposing force to Sean’s abundant enthusiasm. Lois runs the day-to-day school and office operations and works to secure both business and student financing for the future. Lois has the ability to surround herself with an extremely competent staff.

David Smith
Dave, a Utah native, knew he wanted to fly very early in life. After moving and living around the country Dave found his way back to Utah and college. Dave's life followed a couple of divergent career paths before choosing to become a helicopter pilot. Dave attended college and became a journeyman plumber before flight training. We knew Dave was an exceptional instructor. However, Dave has earned proof of his dedication and committment to training by attaining his FAA Gold Seal. Flight Instructor certificates bearing distinctive FAA Gold Seals are issued to flight instructors who have maintained a high level of activity and who meet special criteria. Along with Dave's CFII certificate ratings, Dave holds an Advanced Ground Instructor Rating and has taught a high percentage of students which in turn have passed their FAA examinations. (100%)
